Field Trip to Indigenous Sites

The Beloved Community team is planning a field trip to 3 local Indigenous sites on November 9. Tom Kunesh, a local Indigenous man who works on Indigenous justice issues will lead us to these sites. All 3 sites date from the ‘misispian’ period – 1000-1500 CE. 2 places we’ll visit are temple mounds that were used as town centers and for religious ceremony; one is an old village area that incorporated unique stone box graves.

As a justice seeking community, we expect this field trip to help us better understand the history of our Indigenous neighbors, which is a beginning step in righting the wrongs done to them.

Participants should be prepared to walk in field grass and dress for the weather. Tom expects that we would finish around 1:00, so participants should be prepared with drinking water and snacks or light lunch as they desire. We are to meet Tom at the Cracker Barrel in Mt. Juliet at 8:15.
