Many of you heard during the June 7th worship service that Scott Weaver has accepted an additional role on our staff team- the role of sexton. As promised, I’d like to share a bit of information about how Scott will be supporting the work of the congregation in this new role. The sexton position is 6 hours a week, starting July 1st, and its primary task is to open up and close down the buildings before and after Sunday services, outside rentals, and additional larger church events.

To add a bit more clarity around this I am providing language directly from the sexton job description here:

  • Provide a welcoming and safe environment for anyone using the facility.

  • Responsible for opening the buildings- including the main sanctuary building and Morgan House for services on Sundays and additional events from rentals or larger official church functions, as needed. This includes ensuring the walkways and ramps are clear of debris, doors are unlocked, air conditioning/heating is at the appropriate temperature, and lights are turned on.

  • Responsible for closing the buildings- including the main sanctuary building and Morgan House on Sundays and additional events from rentals or official church functions, as needed. This includes locking all doors, ensuring all candles are extinguished, turning lights off, adjusting the AC/Heat to the appropriate temperatures, and ensuring the coffee urn and any leftover dishes are cleaned.

  • Identify the need for major repairs, to be reported to the Property Committee and any safety concerns to be reported to the Congregational Administrator.

  • Communicate effectively with Congregational Administrator and renters as necessary to ensure set up of equipment as well as the unlocking and securing of all campus buildings needed for the rental.

  • Provide on-call support for church members and outside groups using the building.

  • Monitor supplies of paper goods, (reception plates, silverware, cups) ordering replacements that are in alignment with our values.

  • Monitor recycling in Sanctuary building, give feedback to congregation periodically regarding how well we are doing.  Add recycling bins to rooms that do not have them, ensure signage is affixed to all bins.

Importantly, Scott would not be responsible for greeting duties like starting the coffee maker, setting out food, preparing nametags, etc. He is also not expected to open and close the building during smaller recurring events like Wednesday night potluck, book groups, or team meetings. These would still require those in the meeting to ensure access to the building and tidying up after themselves.

This congregation does a great job caring for our building and it is my hope that the addition of this position will help ensure our many hard-working volunteers feel supported in their much-appreciated roles. If you have additional questions about the sexton role, I invite you to touch base with Scott.

We are SO grateful Scott has agreed to serve us in this role as he is a well-trusted and proven employee through his work as our Worship Audio/Visual Technician and former work with youth in several congregations across our region (including FUUN!).
