Beloveds,

Last weekend I had the great pleasure of traveling to Memphis for the TUUCAN/UU the Vote Solidarity Summit alongside several of our members and UU’s from across the state of Tennessee. The goal was to mark the one year anniversary of the Memphis (un)Safe Task Force- the occupation of Memphis by the National Guard, ICE, FBI, U.S. Marshalls and more. It was our hope that by gathering in Memphis we could bring attention to their ongoing struggle and show solidarity to those living there.

Throughout the course of the weekend we learned safety and de-escalation skills, asset mapping, how to legally and effectively become ICE observers, and strategies to prevent AI data centers being built in our areas (or how to create collective accountability and power if they are). We heard from Emily Yellin, the author of “Nonviolence: A Memoir of Resistance, Agitation and Love” a memoir about Rev. James Lawson Jr.’s crucial role in the Civil Rights, we listened to an update from Planned Parenthood of Tennessee as well as a presentation from a local leader of Young, Gifted and Green. Our weekend ended with a galvanizing worship service led by Tennessee UU clergy (I preached about rage as fuel for change and threw my f-bombs, y’all!) and a gathering at the National Civil Rights Museum where we heard from Representative Justin Pearson who absolutely commanded the room with his brilliant oratory skills.

Throughout the weekend I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges facing our state, the ways to navigate them to make a difference, and the many incredible organizations we can and do support. The cherry on top was spending time with some of you, reconnecting with colleagues, and meeting lots of UU’s engaged in the same good work we are. I cannot speak for the other attendees, but I found the weekend to be both very helpful and energizing. There is so much to feel hopeful about folks!

Yours in the Spirit-

Rev. Charlotte
