What Is a UUA Installation Service?

A Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Installation Service is a joyful, ceremonial moment that marks the official beginning of a covenantal relationship between a congregation and its new minister. Typically held within the first year of a minister’s settlement, the service publicly affirms the shared promises, mutual support, and partnership that define this new ministry together.

An installation service celebrates covenant, recognizing the commitments made by both minister and congregation; affirms partnership, naming the minister as our minister; and includes meaningful rituals such as special music, readings, and symbolic gestures. Members of the congregation, local clergy, and representatives from the wider UUA community gather to witness and bless this new chapter.

Although it often takes place months after the minister has begun their work, the installation stands as an important public milestone—celebrating the successful search process and the start of a shared journey forward.
