Friends,

As we enter a new era in the life of the United States, when I fear for what our country is becoming, I find myself being filled with gratitude for Unitarian Universalism and our association of congregations. As part of our covenant, in times of need, our congregations support one another. Each one of our congregations is a beacon of light and truth during these difficult times. Our congregations are places where we draw strength from each other and find solidarity in the struggle. FUUN is a shining example of how good congregational life can be. I can’t overstate the importance of your continued ministry to each other and to the greater Nashville community, especially now.

I have two pieces of news to draw your attention to.

First, mark your calendar for Sunday, February 23. At 11:30, following the service, I will be delivering a State of the Church presentation. It will be a review of the work we have done together during the past 4 and a half years of developmental ministry and the work that still lies ahead. The presentation will include a close look at the new governance structure and how it impacts the overall functioning of the church. I hope you will attend!

Second, the fires in California have directly impacted many of our fellow UU’s. The Rev. Sarah Gibb-Millspaugh of the Congregational Life Staff for the Pacific Western Region writes:

“Our most impacted congregations in LA are the two that serve Altadena and Pasadena: Throop Memorial Church and Neighborhood Church.

Throop is a small congregation with about 100 members. Two of their staff members and two member households have had homes destroyed. Six households have standing houses that are not livable. Neighborhood is a large midsize congregation with 17 households with destroyed homes and many more that are unlivable. Their minister estimates that 50% of the congregation is currently displaced. Both have strong needs for congregant support and for church property cleanup.”

The UUA Disaster Relief Fund is supporting both congregations. Donations can be sent to the UUA Disaster Relief Fund.”

I hope you will consider giving as you can to assist our fellow UU’s in California. I hope, too, that you will be in attendance at the State of the Church presentation on February 23, in person or on Zoom.

Yours in shared ministry,

Rev. Diane
