“The moment we choose to love we begin to move against domination, against oppression. The moment we choose to love we begin to move towards freedom, to act in ways to liberate ourselves and others.”  bell hooks

Friends,

The winter season is fast approaching, the season when nights are long and days are short. When winter’s darkness lengthens over us and cold weather settles in, we seek sources of light and warmth.

The Unitarian Universalist flaming chalice puts light and warmth at the center of our faith journey. The flaming chalice as a symbol came into being during the second world war, arising as a response to tyranny. Since then, the flaming chalice has served as a beacon of hope for the marginalized and oppressed in our society. It has served as a sign of promise urging us forward in our work for justice; the symbol we need for times such as these.

Ultimately, the flaming chalice is a symbol for the light and warmth of Love, for Love is at the center of our faith and at the periphery. Love is in the middle and on the margins.  It is the flame that burns in our bellies. It is the fuel that keeps us moving on the quest for peace and justice. It is the light that beckons us onward through dark and stormy seasons, a circle of light that encompasses the whole of humanity, a light meant for everyone, a light that leaves no one out.

As the winter holiday season is nearly upon us, my wish for us all is that we choose Love as we move through our days.

Yours in shared ministry,

Rev. Diane
