The Beloved Community Team will sponsor a book read for the month of December. An Indigenous People’s History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz describes the troubling history of the colonizing of the Untied States and the use of the Doctrine of Discovery to steal land and wipe out the indigenous people who first lived here. It is an important history, our history to learn and discuss as a faith community. We want to have this discussion in light of the recommendation of the Beloved Community Team and its Indigenous justice subgroup to make changes in our land acknowledgement to include references to the injustices done to Indigenous People. The share the plate in January will be for the National Indian Cultural Center which will be built in Nashville. We will have a discussion of the book on Jan. 5th following the service in the Thoreau Room. Rev. Diane will do a sermon on Indigenous Justice on January 19th and introduce the new land acknowledgement. We hope this work will inspire us to more justice work in this area. Please read the book and join us for this discussion.
