An Invitation from Greater Nashville UU Congregation

Dear UU siblings at First UU Nashville,

As we face the growing threat of autocracy in our country, it's more crucial than ever that we come together to build a stronger, more united movement for democracy (which has always been an important value for Unitarians, Universalists, and UUs).

That is why Greater Nashville UU Congregation will be hosting in-person gatherings of the Rise for Freedom Training Series every Thursday for the next few weeks. We are inviting friends like you to come together and learn how to organize and mobilize diverse, nonpartisan communities to demand democracy.

There is already so much good organizing work being done in Nashville. If you’ve been unsure about joining in, this will be a supportive and fun way to learn and practice basic skills. If you are already experienced, you’ll learn how and why your skills are so important to leverage in the face of current threats to democracy.

Please come to as many/few of these training sessions as you can. Each session (except maybe the last two) is designed to be a standalone and will include:

  • Music and icebreakers
  • Calls to action for local leaders
  • Outreach mini-training & goal setting
  • Digital hygiene tips
  • A core online training module, with in-person breakouts for hands-on learning and planning

Where: GNUUC, 374 Hicks Rd. Nashville (Bellevue)

When: Thursdays starting April 3 through May 15 from 7 pm to 9 pm CT (arrive around 6:45, if you can). Attend any or all!

  • April 3: How did we get here? Intro to organizing under creeping autocracy

  • April 10: Building to a critical mass locally (outreach)

  • April 17: How to talk to people you might disagree with

  • April 24: Making political violence backfire

  • May 1: Mutual Aid & Structures for Stronger Local Organizing

  • May 8: Deescalation & Strategies for organizing

  • May 15: Advanced Strategic organizing skills

Please bring interested friends or neighbors, and feel free to bring snacks to share.

If you can’t attend our in-person gathering, you can join online: Go to this site to register.

I hope to see you soon, so we can learn and plan together!
